“One day he was suddenly back”

The legendary newspaperman Kurt Safranski met Axel Springer by surprise in 1953. The by then 62-year-old had returned from exile in New York at the request of the Ullsteins in order to develop a new illustrated magazine. Safranski kept a journal of his visit to Germany. The interesting read was given to the Company Archive by his granddaughters. It casts a new light on the relationship between the venerable publishing house Ullstein and the up-and-coming publisher Springer.
